Lesson 5
Coefficients
New names for old
Page 171
By our basic definition,
b − n = ( 1 )/( b n )
and therefore
10 − 1 = ( 1 )/( 101 ) = ( 1 )/( 10 ) = .1.
The question was: What is the coefficient of
10 − 1 in 142.67. The coefficient of
10 − 1 is the number that tells us how many .1’s are used, isn’t it? Your answer, 7, is the number of .01’s used, because 7 is the coefficient of
10 − 2 , and
10 − 2 = ( 1 )/( 102 ) = ( 1 )/( 100 ) = .01.
Now return to Page 169 and try again.
