We had just told you that in the octal system we use only the numerals 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Therefore 188 is not a proper octal number.
So how shall we get to the next number beyond 178? Well, we have gone as far as we can by increasing the coefficient of (80); that is , the digit on the right. We shall have to use a higher multiple of (81) to go further. In other words, we shall have to increase the left-hand digit, shan’t we?
