You are correct. When you have reached 778 in the octal system, you have gone as far as you can go with two digits in the octal system. To reach a higher number you have to go to the next higher power of the base. (In this respect 778 is similar to 9910 in the decimal system.)
You can easily check that 1008 is the octal number following 778 by expanding both numbers:
778  = 7(81) + 7(80)  = 7(8) + 7(1) = 6310; 1008  = 1(82) + 0(81) + 0(80)  = 1(64) + 0(8) + 0(1) = 6410.
Very well, what is the octal number that follows 7778? In other words, what is 7778 + 18?
Answer :
7778 + 18 = 1, 7778.
