Look at the two diagrams below, which show the addition of 5 to 6 in the octal and decimal systems:
OCTAL

DECIMAL
six plus fivemore  ⁄ 110 210 310 410 510 610\  ⁄ 710 810 910 1010 1110\ 1210 1310
When you count five numbers beyond 6 in the octal system, you reach 138, not 118, don’t you? Since 138 = 1110, the quantity you reach is the same in both systems, but it is written 138 in octal and 1110 in decimal.
