Lesson 2
The Arithmetic of Powers
Multiplication by addition, and division by subtraction
We stated the rule for division of powers of numbers as
(bm)/(bn) = b(m − n)
and we gave you the problem of dividing b3 by b2. We even set the problem up for you:
(b3)/(b2) = ?
Now, all you have to do to solve the problem correctly is to put in the numerical values we gave you for m and n in the relationship used in the division, and write the answer. (m is the exponent of the dividend, n is the exponent of the divisor.) You should be able to work it out now, so return to Page 50 and choose the correct answer.
