( 24 )/( 4 ) = 6
can we call the number 24 the “dividend”?
We can. A fraction is an indicated division. The two forms in which division might be shown are illustrated below:

When you learned arithmetic at school you probably saw division indicated as

or perhaps
24÷4 = 6,
but division can equally be indicated in the fractional form as, for example,
( 24 )/( 4 ) .
So we may perfectly well refer to 24 in this case as the dividend.

Answer to Self-Test Question 10, Lesson 2 :
9 is the divisor, 45 is the dividend, and 5 is the quotient.
