	RULE

− 4 + 3 = − 1	To add numbers of unlike sign, find the difference of the absolute values, attach the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.

6 − 8	To subtract any number, change the sign of the number being subtracted; then add instead, following the rule, in this case, for addition of unlike sign.
= ( + 6) − ( + 8) = sign changed ↓ ( + 6) + ( − 8) = − 2 ↑ add instead

− 7 − ( − 3)	See subtraction rule above.
= sign changed ↓ − 7 + ( + 3) = − 4 ↑ add instead

− 9 + ( − 2) = − 11	To add numbers of like sign, add the absolute values and attach the common sign.
