36₈ = 240₁₀.

You must have written 36₈ in the expanded form as

36₈ = 3(8²) + 6(8¹)

which is incorrect.

Remember that when we deal with whole numbers, the right-hand digit is always the coefficient of the 0 power of the base, the next digit to the left is the coefficient of the 1st power of the base, and so on. So the correct expansion is

36₈ = 3(8¹) + 6(8⁰).
