In the number 3468, the subscript 8, which is written halfway below the line at the right-hand end of the number, is not a digit in the number. It identifies the number as an octal number, written in a system based on powers of 8. The subscript numbers we shall use from now on in these volumes are intended only to identify the base of the number system being used and have no part at all in the calculations.
