8 − ( − 6) =  − 2.
The problem was 8 − ( − 6). You must have changed the signs of both the numbers instead of changing just the sign of the number being subtracted.
Here is how you should have proceeded:
sign changed 8 − ( − 6) = ( + 8) − ( − 6) = ( + 8)  +  ( + 6)  = ? add instead of subtract
